Early on Tuesday, March 17th, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady announced his departure in two Twitter posts thanking fans and the Patriots organization. Brady has not yet announced where he will play in the 2020 season, but all hints point to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Los Angeles Chargers.
If Brady were to join the Buccaneers, which seems like a strong possibility at this point, that leaves the question of what to do with current quarterback Jameis Winston. Tampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians has said that he could move on from Winston if they could find a better quarterback, and who better than one of the greatest of all time to lead your offense?
Winston may have the option to stay and learn behind Brady for a season or two to help him become a better decision maker and passer, but the likelihood is that he would try to find another suitor.
What better team would there be for Jameis to go to than the team that Brady just left?
Winston has been known to be reckless with the football, although he does have an incredible arm and can make a litany of difficult throws. He proved that this past season by being the first quarterback ever to throw 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in a single season.
If Patriots head coach and GM Bill Belichick would be willing to take a chance on the young quarterback, he could very well have his new quarterback of the future. Working with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could help Winston improve his decision making ability and really tap into his big play ability.
The Patriots offense might not currently have the playmakers that Winston might be used to with the Bucs, but Belichick is smart enough to build around the talent of his players and would put pieces around Winston to highlight his abilities.
Winston occasionally can look like one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL. On the flip side of that, he can also look like one of the best. The problem is he tends to shift between the two at random points.
If the Patriots organization could help Winston improve on some of his weaker areas and help him build consistency so his tendency to make poor choices diminishes, Winston could see himself becoming one of the top passers in the league.
To go from Tom Brady to an improved and mistake-reduced Jameis Winston would be amazing for Patriots fans and the worst thing ever for Patriots haters.
Whether or not Winston would improve with New England, he would certainly make their offense much more exciting to watch.
